Reflection for Second Sunday of Advent

December 4, 2011

By Sister Deborah, Ministry with Women, Clorinda, Argentina

As I was preparing this Advent reflection, an orchid on the palm tree in my backyard in Clorinda, Argentina burst into bloom. What a sign of life-giving hope! And for me it became a powerful image of the Root of Jesse—that age-old symbol for the humble and ordinary lineage of Jesus, Son of David.

And I was led to contemplate the simple people with whom I minister, who out of their poverty share kindness and truth. For example, Geronima who comes every Thursday to prepare and make available used clothes to people with very limited resources; or Griselda who sold food on the street for many years and now is committed to using her computer skills to help others better their lives; the women who help staff our women’s center, Ñande Roga Guazú, organizing and participating in events such as the annual campaign against violence toward women. In them “kindness and truth shall meet, justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out the earth and justice shall look down from heaven.” Let us gaze at the orchid and at the faces of these women and be inspired to celebrate the birth of Jesus with renewed hope in the goodness of humankind.

What a beautiful reminder of the beauties of the Earth and the beautiful people we are privileged to meet and accompany as we wend our way to peace in our time. Thank you, Deborah. Pat
