Matthew 25 and MLK’s Dream Still Speak to Us Today

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne and all the nations will be assembled before him.

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today my friends.
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

And he will separate them one from another,
as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin
but by the content of their character.

Cuando el Hijo del Hombre venga en su gloria, y todos sus ángeles con él, se sentará en su trono glorioso y todas las naciones se reunirán ante él.

Les digo hoy mis amigos: No nos revolquemos en el valle de la desesperación.
Y así, aunque afrontemos las dificultades de hoy y mañana, aún tengo un sueño. Es un sueño profundamente arraigado en el sueño americano.

Y Él separará unos de otros,
como un pastor separa las ovejas de las cabras.

La mano de la Misericordia…
reconforta mientras desafía,
consuela en medio de las dificultades.

La mano de la Misericordia…
responde a las personas necesitadas,
acoge a mujeres y niños,
extiende la sanación a todas las personas,
educa más allá de lo conocido.

La mano de la Misericordia…
desafía el racismo sistémico,
participa en iniciativas de defensa por la justicia,
trabaja por la justicia,
camina con cada inmigrante.

Allí…
en la mano de la Misericordia
se manifiesta la Presencia.

Allí…
en la mano de la Misericordia
yace nuestro legado
de acción y contemplación.

Nosotras somos la mano de la Misericordia.

Entering the Journey of Transformation

It is mid-July 2020, and there is unrest. There is unrest everywhere.

More than 14.8 million people worldwide have been infected with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and more than 615,000 have died. Within the United States, medical officials are reporting record high numbers of coronavirus cases every day, with nearly 3 million now infected.

Daily news reports show demonstrations and protests locally, nationally and globally over the practices of injustice and systemic racism. In the United States, we see signs that read:

No justice, no peace
Mercy for Justice
Black Lives Matter
Enough is Enough
I can’t breathe
Am I next?

The second reading for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time was from Romans 6:34, 8–11. In it is one line that stopped me: “Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?”

I invite you to be with that message: We were baptized into his (Jesus’) death. How do I live/practice that belief? How do we as Sisters of Mercy live/practice that belief?

Entrar por el Camino de la Transformación

Estamos a mediados de julio de 2020, y hay disturbios. Hay disturbios en todas partes.

Más de 14,8 millones de personas en todo el mundo se han infectado con COVID-19, la enfermedad causada por el nuevo coronavirus, y más de 615.000 han muerto. Dentro de los Estados Unidos, los funcionarios de los servicios sanitarios están reportando un número récord de casos de coronavirus cada día, con casi 3 millones de personas infectadas ahora.

Los informes de las noticias diarias muestran manifestaciones y protestas locales, nacionales y mundiales por las prácticas de injusticia y racismo sistémico. En los Estados Unidos, vemos carteles que dicen:

Sin justicia, no hay paz
La Misericordia a favor de la justicia
Las vidas negras importan
Basta ya
No puedo respirar
¿Soy el/la siguiente?

La segunda lectura del Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario fue de Romanos 6, 3-4. 8-11. En ella hay una frase que me detuvo: «Todos los que hemos sido incorporados a Cristo Jesús por medio del bautismo, hemos sido incorporados a su muerte».

Te invito a quedarte con ese mensaje: fuimos bautizados en su muerte (la de Jesús). ¿Cómo vivo/practico esa verdad? ¿Cómo vivimos y practicamos esa verdad como Hermanas de la Misericordia?

The Simple Profundities of Life on the Border

I have been an educator at the secondary level for seven years and practiced as a therapist (licensed clinical social worker) for 38 years; then I listened to the emerging desire to engage in a different expression of practicing as a therapist. Thus began the journey of learning the details of digital photography as well as therapeutic photography, contemplative photography and visio divina. I earned a certificate in digital photography, and I continue photography courses through the Missouri Botanical Garden. This avenue provides the more artistic expression of photography.

A photograph can be simultaneously simple as well as profound.  Each picture has a message that speaks to our heart and mind. I have found that many times I was in the right place at the right time to receive the moment of a photograph. I do not believe it happened by chance; it was all providential.

I took the following photographs during a visit to Pharr and Laredo, Texas, at the end of January/beginning of February 2020. They tell the story of our political situation today.

The Rio Grande River is 1,885 miles long. It separates families from being together along the boundaries of Texas and Mexico. Individuals who are in the U.S. through DACA cannot return to Mexico to see their families, as they would be detained and not allowed to re-enter the U.S.

Las Profundidades Sencillas de la Vida en la Frontera

He sido educadora de nivel secundario durante siete años y terapeuta (trabajadora social clínica con licencia) por 38 años; luego escuché el deseo emergente de participar de un modo diferente para ejercer la terapia. Así comencé el recorrido de aprender los detalles de la fotografía digital y de la fotografía terapéutica, la fotografía contemplativa y la mirada divina. Obtuve una certificación en fotografía digital, y continúo en cursos de fotografía en el Jardín Botánico de Missouri. Esta vía proporciona la expresión más artística de la fotografía.

Una fotografía puede ser al mismo tiempo simple y profunda. Cada foto tiene un mensaje que le habla a nuestro corazón y a nuestra mente. Me he dado cuenta de que muchas veces he estado en el lugar y momento adecuados para captar el momento de una fotografía. No creo que haya sucedido por casualidad; todo fue providencial.

Las siguientes fotografías fueron tomadas durante una visita a Pharr y Laredo, Texas, a fines de enero e inicios de febrero de 2020. Hablan de nuestra historia y situación política actuales.

In Life, Looking Is Not The Same As Seeing

I have learned that what is planned as your intention is not always what you will receive. This is specifically true when applied to photography.

I am currently on sabbatical studying photography, which teaches many lessons, including being open to the present moment. In addition to learning the mechanics, I am also focusing on contemplative photography, which is more than a mechanical process; it is being open to seeing the natural inspiration of your surroundings. The technical and mechanical parts require learning the skills and language: bokeh, ISO, aperture, etc. The contemplative aspect is coming to understand and practice the reality that looking is not the same as seeing.

En la vida, mirar no es lo mismo que ver

He aprendido que la intención con la que planeas algo no siempre da el resultado que esperas. Esto es especialmente verdadero cuando lo aplicas a la fotografía.

Actualmente estoy en un año sabático estudiando fotografía, la cual enseña muchas lecciones, incluso estar abierta al momento presente. Además de aprender la cuestión mecánica, también me concentro en la fotografía contemplativa, que es más que un proceso mecánico; es estar abierta a ver las inspiraciones naturales de nuestro alrededor. Las partes técnicas y mecánicas requieren aprender habilidades y lenguaje: desenfoque, sensibilidad ISO, apertura de diafragma, etc. El aspecto contemplativo viene a comprender y practicar la realidad de que mirar no es lo mismo que ver.
