Mercy Grateful to Senate for Not Repealing and Replacing Affordable Care Act
July 28, 2017
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas are grateful that the U.S. Senate did not repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act this week, and we call on senators of both parties to work together to truly improve the country’s healthcare system for all Americans.
The Sisters of Mercy have consistently declared that health care is a fundamental human right, and were dismayed that the Senate was considering the Better Care Reconciliation Act, which would have left 15 million more people without health coverage in the first year. About 550 Sisters of Mercy signed onto a letter along with more than 6,500 other Catholic nuns opposing the legislation, and more than 750 Mercy advocates emailed their legislators to voice deep concerns.
We now urge representatives and senators to craft bipartisan legislation that will stabilize insurance markets, improve affordability, and strengthen and expand health coverage.
