Philippines Needs Recovery Assistance After Typhoon Vinta
January 02, 2018
On December 21, Typhoon Vinta made landfall in the Province of Lanao del Norte in the Philippines. A subsequent mudslide occurred in Tubod, claiming the lives of 60. Mercy Junior College was able to house some victims. Similar slides have occurred in Kolambugan, Maranding, Lala, Salvador and Sapad, where more than 100 deaths have been reported. An estimated 70,000 individuals have been displaced by the storm damage, according to CNN.
In another unfortunate incident just before Christmas, the Holy Cross Convent in Kolambugan was robbed and roughly $16,000 stolen including teachers’ December salary and bonus, as well as other funds.
Please pray for the sisters in these areas who are safe but suffering and working to minister to their local communities in need. Donations to the recovery effort can be sent to the New York, Pennsylvania, Pacific West Development Office at 625 Abbott Road, Buffalo, NY 14220. Please note “Philippines” in the check memo.
