Sisters of Mercy Call for a Truly Modern Immigration Plan
May 16, 2019
This afternoon, the president outlined his plan for “modernizing our immigration system for a stronger America,” where he once again called for the militarization of our southern border and steep cuts to our current asylum system. Let us be clear, there is nothing modern about spending billions of dollars to fund a medieval wall or turning away people who are fleeing for their lives, with legitimate claims to asylum. Further, this emphasis on a merit-based system needs to be unmasked for its contributing motivation of racism, steering visas for highly educated workers, likely mostly white immigrants.
What the President and his Administration continuously fails to understand is that we are a stronger America because of our immigrant sisters and brothers. Immigrants built our cities, create thriving businesses and contribute to the economic and cultural wellbeing of this nation.
There are solutions for a modern and effective immigration system—one that addresses the status of people who are undocumented and implements a humane and generous asylum system. Viable proposals are currently being offered in Congress which would protect and regularize the status of young “Dreamers” as well as those with Temporary Protected Status (TPS); but instead, this Administration is pursuing what amounts to exponentially disastrous “family separation.”
We are at a moment of reflective national soul-searching. If serious immigration reforms are not enacted, how can we continue to allow the quote “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” to be at the base of the Statue of Liberty?
