Sisters of Mercy Denounce Attack on Tree of Life Synagogue
October 29, 2018
The solemnity of another one of our country’s places of worship was shattered by hate and violence on Saturday. The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas are heartbroken by this attack on our Jewish sisters and brothers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This sickening act, one clearly rooted in anti-Semitism and white supremacy, is the latest in a time that has seen too many expressions of bigotry and hatred. As a nation and a people of faith, we must address the divisive rhetoric that plants seeds of hate in vulnerable people’s minds. Words matter and we urge political leaders and other public officials to change their tone.
Weapons of war have no place in houses of worship. We will continue to advocate tirelessly for a world without violence as we offer our prayers for all those affected by this unspeakable act. Pittsburgh first welcomed us in 1843 and is a community near and dear to our hearts. We are confident that the resilient city of steel will always be stronger than hate. Today our Jewish sisters and brothers mourn as have the LGBT, Black, Muslim, and other communities before them and we must all actively ensure that they are the last.
