July 14, 2014
Sister Cora Marie Billings describes her experiences of being “the first” or the “the only” African-American Catholic and woman religious in many situations in an essay published in the July 7-14, 2014 issue of America magazine. In this essay, she also writes about her awakening to the many ways in which systems in society, including the Catholic Church, perpetuate racism.
