Sister Ellen Guerin, Age 86

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Initially, Sister Ellen taught middle and high school in the Worcester, Massachusetts, Diocese for 10 years and in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for seven years. After receiving master’s degrees in spirituality, chemistry and biology, she served in higher education in the library at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester and as campus minister at Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts. A theology professor for 14 years at Assumption University in Worcester, she eventually became their dean of studies.

A missionary at heart, Sister Ellen also served in formation in Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore. In her later years, she ministered at St. Joseph Home for Women (now Abby’s House), Catholic Charities and as the director of religious education at Christ the King Parish, all in Worcester.

A woman filled with the joy and compassion of Mercy, Sister Ellen was a scholar and a teacher who reached out to struggling students to help them succeed. Accomplished yet humble, Sister Ellen overcame huge language barriers while ministering in Thailand. She loved to tell stories from that time, especially about her constant need for shoes, since crawling creatures regularly devoured them. In her later years, Sister Ellen relied on God’s great love as she gracefully focused on preparing to see God face to face.
