Sister Mary Antonita Tobin, Age 96

Tuesday, June 23, 2020

An educator at heart, Sister Mary Antonita ministered in elementary and secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for 35 years. At West Catholic, John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls', Archbishop Prendergast and Archbishop Ryan High Schools she taught English, Latin and religion and served as the prefect of studies and guidance. She persuaded many young women to consider religious life. Moving on to Gwynedd Mercy Academy, she continued to teach English and journalism while moderating the school newspaper.

An avid reader, Sister Antonita had an excellent command of the English language. Some would say they received three credits in vocabulary just conversing with her. Sister Antonita used her communication gifts in public relations at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Darby, Pennsylvania. She also served as secretary to Bishop Robert Maginnis, an auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia. Her final ministry was at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia as a receptionist and library assistant.

When Sister Antonita retired to McAuley Convent in Merion, Pennsylvania, she gave herself fully to a ministry of prayer. She continued to share a vitality of life, care for her sisters and scintillating conversations.
