Sister Margaret Anne O’Connor, Age 81

Mid-Atlantic

Saturday, December 26, 2020

Born in Geneva, New York, and educated at St. Mary’s College in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, Sister Margaret (Peg) entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1960. After graduating from College Misericordia, Dallas, Pennsylvania, where she studied Latin and German, she earned a master’s degree in education and counseling from Millersville State College. Sister Peg served as an elementary school teacher, a principal and a counselor at various schools in the Dioceses of Scranton, Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Brooklyn, New York. For 15 years, Sister Peg ministered as a counselor at Wholistic Growth Resources in Little Falls, Minnesota. She continued living her motto, “One Mind, One Heart, and One Will,” most recently during her ministry as religious coordinator at Mercy Center, Dallas, Pennsylvania.

One of her greatest joys was the sabbatical experience she enjoyed at Mercy International in Dublin, Ireland, in 2003. During this time, Peg explored her Irish roots, met Sisters of Mercy from all over the world and rekindled her deep devotion to the spirituality of Catherine McAuley. With her inbred Irish wit and keen intelligence, Sister Peg integrated the spirituality of Catherine into her own life of hospitality, generosity and compassionate service.
