Sister Mary Dorothea Montgomery, Age 95

South Central

Wednesday, December 16, 2020

Sister Mary Dorothea Montgomery was educated by the Ursuline Sisters at St. Lawrence in Philpot, Kentucky. One of her Ursuline teachers had a picture on her desk of her blood sister, a Sister of Mercy. After graduating from high school, Sister Dorothea worked at General Electric. She had several visits with her pastor about entering the Ursulines; all she knew about the Sisters of Mercy was that one picture. However, during the process of interviewing, she became impressed with the Sisters of Mercy because of “their friendliness, poverty and cleanliness.”

Sister Dorothea entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cincinnati, Ohio, on February 2, 1946, and professed perpetual vows in Cincinnati on August 16, 1951. The motto in her ring stated, “Thy Will Be Done.” She received a degree from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as a certificate in social services. She ministered as a teacher of primary grades from 1948 to 1988 in Columbus, Ohio, and in Louisville, Pewee Valley, LaGrange and Paducah, Kentucky.
