Sister Catherine Colliton
Entered: September 8, 1954 – Manchester, New Hampshire
Current Ministry: Caregiving for my sister, Sister Justine Colliton
Motto: All for Thee, O Lord
I have been a Sister of Mercy for 65 years, primarily as a Latin teacher serving in New Hampshire (Manchester, Hampton and Windham) and Virginia (Newport News). As part of my teaching, I often moderated extracurriculum activities after school or on weekends. Such was my life and my contribution to life, until one recent day around noontime, while I was feeding my sister, Sister Justine, on the porch at the nursing home where she lives, and I saw the best lesson of my life.
At one side of the porch was an elderly woman resident who fell asleep while being fed by her daughter. So the daughter kissed her mother goodbye and left. What happened next greatly moved me. One of the cleaning ladies, a friend of mine too, came onto the scene and saw that the elderly woman resident had just awakened. Without any hesitation, the cleaning lady began to feed the woman and stayed with her until her dinner was gone. After 65 years of vowed life in the care of the poor, the sick, and the ignorant, I regarded what I saw as a miracle happening in a small room in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
