Sister Marjorie DeStout
Entered: September 8, 1959 – Cumberland, Rhode Island
Current Ministry: Pastoral work at a Honduras Catholic school
Motto: Love as I have loved you
I entered the Community on September 8, 1959. On that first day, when presented to the provincial, Sister Mary Catherine, I told her I wanted to go to the missions, a request I renewed at first profession of vows and again at renewal of vows. In the summer of 1966, I was assigned to La Ceiba, Honduras, to work at Instituto María Regina, a grades 7-12 school affiliated with the Sisters of Mercy, and made my final vows here in La Ceiba in 1967. In 1971, I was named rectora, and I continued in that position and also taught mathematics to the seniors until 2008, when I retired from administration and teaching. Since then I work part time in the high school’s Pastoral Department and in the new Maria Regina Bilingual School.
In 1983, a friend and colleague and I wrote a series of math books for grades 7-11, which was used in our school and many schools around the country until 2017. I daily thank our God for his many blessings—my family, the Sisters of Mercy who taught me in junior high at the Immaculate Conception School, my vocation to the Sisters of Mercy, and the wonderful people of La Ceiba who have given me so much love and support these last 53 years. Truly I am blessed!
