Age 97
A good and gentle soul, Sister Margaret was the heart of the heartland with a deep spiritual life, quick wit and lively sense of humor.
Born on the family farm in Bankston, Iowa, Mildred Lucille was the third of eight children. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 19.
She received her bachelor’s degree from Mercy College, a master’s degree in education from Wayne State University, both in Detroit, Michigan. Sister Millie excelled as a teacher, principal, mentor and guide in Iowa and Michigan.
A teacher for 25 years in the Dubuque, Iowa, Grand Rapids and Detroit, Michigan, dioceses, Sister Mille also served as principal at five different schools including Our Lady of LaSalette School, in Berkley, Michigan, and St. Anslem School in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.
She served as formation director for the former Detroit Regional Community for three years and as a Head Start teacher for two years in Dubuque, Iowa. Sister Millie then ministered as the
associate director of catechetical services for the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa. She also volunteered in “The Ministry of the Present Moment” in Dubuque before moving to McAuley Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and then to St. Bernardine Home in Fremont, Ohio, where she continued a ministry of prayer and presence until her death.
