Age 94
Sister Teresa McGreevy blessed hundreds of people – students, teens, young adults, and the elderly – as she ministered as a teacher, guidance counselor, social worker and administrator in Brooklyn, New York.
Born in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, to Irish immigrant parents, Teresa first encountered the Sisters of Mercy during her high school years at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, New York. At the age of 22, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Syosset.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in counseling from Fordham University in the Bronx, New York, and a master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York.
After teaching elementary and high school for 14 years in the Brooklyn and Rockville Centre Diocese, she became the director of guidance for seven years at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, New York. Her talent for administration and team leadership guided her to become a social worker and then the director of social work services at Consolation Nursing Home in Long Island where she served for 18 years.
After three years as serving as the director of parish social ministry at St. Peter’s Parish in Islip, New York, she ministered for 15 years as a medical social worker for the Visiting Nurse Association in Garden City, New York. Sister Teresa lived at the Convent of Mercy in Whitestone, New York, after retiring from active ministry due to increased health problems. She loved to share her work and family memories with the sisters and staff at the convent as she continued to await the coming of her Lord to take her home, thus fulfilling her motto “Into Your hands I entrust my spirit.”
