Age 90
Inspired by her motto, “that I may see,” Sister Anna sought to discover the potential in her many students, colleagues and family members.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, after graduating from St. Mary Academy Bay View in Riverside, Rhode Island, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cumberland, Rhode Island. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Catholic Teachers College and a master’s degree from Rhode Island College, both in Providence.
Ministering nearly forty years as a teacher of elementary and high school in the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, she taught elementary school for nine years and high school math for 19 years. In 1968 she was named the principal of St. Joseph School in Pascoag, Rhode Island where she initiated an innovative mathematics course for advanced students. After three years, she then returned to teach at St. Mary Bay View. An excellent mathematics teacher, she also inspired students with her love of science.
She developed her technical skills at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Bristol, Rhode Island. where she served as the secretary at the beginning of their new governing structure. She then became a math tutor at St. Mary’s Academy in Bay View for the next eight years before retiring. In her last years at Mount St Rita Convent in Cumberland, Rhode Island, she moved from a ministry of prayer and presence to waiting for God to call her home.
