Age 85

A quiet but strong Mercy presence, Sister Margery had the unique ability to connect with students and colleagues in ways that allowed them to grow, blossom, discern their gifts and share with the world.

At the age of 18, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in Albany, New York. She earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts from Maria College in Albany, New York, a bachelor’s degree in French from Rivier College in Nashua, New Hampshire, and a master’s degree in education from the State University of New York in Albany, New York. She also did post graduate study in theology at Boston College in Boston, Massachusetts, and Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut.

A true educator, she taught at elementary, secondary school and collegiate levels. Early in her career she taught elementary students in the Diocese of Albany, New York. She then taught at Catholic Central High School for seven years, followed by a year each at Mercy High School and the Academy of the Holy Names, all in Albany. Marge also ministered as principal at Our Lady of Victory in Troy, New York, for nine years and as coordinator of program and staff development at Academy of Holy Names in Albany, New York, before becoming the director of the Albany campus of St. Bernard’s Graduate School of Theology.

In 2000, Marge accepted a part-time position in the education department at Russell Sage College in Troy, New York, where she instructed and supervised student teachers. From 2000 to 2012, Marge was a pastoral associate for administration at Mater Christi parish in Albany, New York, before retiring from active ministry.

Marge did not seek the spotlight, but she would speak truth to power to fight an injustice. She showed up for students, family, friends, colleagues and strangers in time of need, and her kindness was not forgotten.
