Age 98

Sister Mary Ann’s life was a testament to faith, education, and compassionate leadership, leaving a lasting impact on countless students, colleagues, and Sisters of Mercy.  

Born in Delmont, Pennsylvania, Sister Mary Ann entered the Sisters of Mercy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the age of 19. Her ministry in Catholic education began as a postulant, teaching all subjects to third-grade students at St. Regis School in Pittsburgh. Following her canonical year, she continued teaching grades four through six at St. Elizabeth and St. Agnes Schools, both in Pittsburgh.  

While serving as a teacher, she pursued a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in English from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She later obtained a master’s degree in administration from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh and her elementary school principal certification. 

Sister Mary Ann, served as both a teacher and principal in multiple schools in the diocese of Pittsburgh, culminating in her long-term role as principal of St. Pius School, Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, for 17 years. After retiring from education, she continued her service as director of environmental services at the Convent of Mercy in Pittsburgh and later in pastoral ministry praying for her fellow sisters in their religious community.
