Age 96

A teacher, assistant principal, principal/superior, registrar and a Sister of Mercy for 76 years, Sister Betty attended Catholic schools in Chicago, Illinois, graduating from Mercy High School/St. Patrick Academy in 1943. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Des Plaines, Illinois, two years later.

Sister Betty served at several Illinois and Wisconsin parochial schools for more than 50 years. Many of her former students likely remember her as Sister Mary Eugenius. She was principal at three Illinois schools, including St. Joan of Arc in Skokie, St. Catherine of Siena in Oak Park and St. Stephen in Des Plaines.

In 2002, Sister Betty said goodbye to teaching. Music became her new volunteer ministry that she shared with those in assisted living and Alzheimer’s facilities in Darien and Chicago. Her motto, “Mary, make me love God more,” served her well. She moved to Mercy Circle in 2013.
