Age 71
Like Catherine McAuley, Sister Sharon had an unshakable desire to serve. Whether she was instructing students, supporting seniors in New Jersey, or caring for sisters at their retirement center in Whitestone, New York, she lived her vocation with joy, humility, and deep conviction.
Sharon entered the Sisters of Mercy in Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 30. She held bachelor’s degrees in psychology and music from Molloy University in Rockville Centre, New York, and a master’s degree in reading from Dowling University on Long Island, New York.
She taught at Mercy High School in Riverside, New York, for 11 years and at Catherine McAuley High School in Brooklyn, New York, for 12 years. She also served as the organist at Our Lady of Poland in Southampton, New York, for seven years. For 11 years she was the program director at Bayshore Senior Health, Education and Recreation Center in Keansburg, New Jersey. Next, she ministered as the activity coordinator at the Convent of Mercy in Whitestone, New York.
A voracious reader and lover of music with a fine singing voice and a great sense of humor, Sharon was always ready for a new challenge as reflected in her varied ministries. She was inspired by her motto, “My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior,” and freely shared her talents and expertise.
