Generations of people in the United States have struggled to gain the right to vote, so it is vital that all eligible citizens exercise that right in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections on November 3.
In a democracy, strong differences of opinion on policies and issues are normal. However, it is critical that everyone, including government officials and law enforcement, ensure a peaceful election where all votes are counted and the results are respected, whatever the outcome. No one should be intimidated or disenfranchised, regardless of their political affiliation or whether they are naturalized or native-born citizens.
We call on all citizens to use your vote to promote the common good, reflected in our Mercy values and the Gospel call to welcome the stranger, reject violence and protect the weak.
We ask you to join us in praying that peace will prevail.
